The Grind movie review

The Grind isn't much different than most straight-to-DVD flicks these days. It's low budget, and there's not particularly much to the story.

The story follows Luke, played by C. Thomas Howell (Outsiders), a Los Angeles scam artist whose massive debt is sold to Mexican gangsters.

With his life and that of his friends hanging in the balance, he comes up with a a scheme to repay his debt in a week's time.  Along with two of his accomplices, he sets out to create a voyeur website featuring four sexy women.  But things don't go exactly to plan thanks to the greed and violent history of the people involved.

The good news is that the cinematography is good, as well as the color correction and lighting. The four roommates are played by Christina DeRosa, Lauren Walsh, Eve Mauro, and Sarah Scott.  Each of the four women are extremely sexy, and there's a good bit of nudity in the film.

The problem is that the story itself is weak, and the concept of starting a website to pay off a $24,000 debt is simply laughable. There's no real character development, and the film concludes with a number of unanswered questions. It was also annoying that Luke's character sustains a major beating at the start of the film, but his bloody appearance never changes throughout the course of a week.  It was almost as though all of his scenes were shot in a day, to keep down the cost of makeup services.

None of the performances stand out, save perhaps for a small contribution by Tom Sizemore (Heat, Natural Born Killers). Danny Trejo, of Desperado and Machete fame, stars as Mexican mob boss Nicholi Guzman.  Though it's definitely misleading that Sizemore and Danny Trejo are on the DVD cover, despite both actors only getting about two minutes of screen time.

While it may have been shot better than most low-budget flicks, The Grind is still a film with weak writing and dialogue. The only redeeming aspect was that there were four incredibly hot women to keep you watching. But even that factor only made the film halfway worth a rental.  So unless you're a big fan of eye candy and the occasional sex scene, give this one a pass.
