"Platanos & Collard Greens" Off Broadway Production in NYC
5/30/06 - news / Between The Lines Productions

Platanos and Collard Greens

Writer/Producer/Hip-Hop scholar David Lamb brings his first book "Do Platanos Go Wit' Collard Greens?" to life in the stage production of "Platanos & Collard Greens."

The production, which debuted to sold-out audiences in 2003, is continuing its Off-Broadway run from May 5th through July 23rd 2006 at Florence Gould Hall located at 55 E. 59th Street (between Park and Madison Avenues) in Manhattan.

This hugely successful show has enchanted audiences of nearly 40,000 people both Off Broadway and in over 10 major cities at more than 100 universities in 17 states across the country.

The play tells the story of two college students, Freeman, an African-American man, and Angelita, a Latino woman, both forced to confront and overcome cultural and racial prejudices, while defending their bond from the biases held by family and friends.

"Platanos & Collard Greens' is a though-provoking romantic comedy that tactfully addresses stereotypes, prejudices, and urban myths that exist between African-Americans and Latinos, within the context of Hip Hop, humor, and satire. The play encourages the audience to evaluate the stereotypes that pervade the urban New York experience. Lamb displays these common yet outrageous viewpoints while humorously and deftly shooting them down and poetically exposing them justly as misrepresentations of reality. The audience is likely to question conventional attitudes held about themselves and others. Platanos will remind you of your family, your loves, your life.

"Cultures and passions collide in "Platanos and Collard Greens" ... The play combines dramatic dialogue with the poetics of hip-hop." - New York Post
