Joell Ortiz Signs to

Back in November we
interviewed Brooklyn rapper Joell Ortiz (click
here to read), speaking with him about being on the grind.
The work paid off, as the Puerto Rican MC just inked a deal
with Interscope. Joell provided details to LatinRapper.com
about the signing, and his first album through Aftermath is
slated for a 2007 release.
When asked as to whether or not we can expect some hot
production from Dr. Dre himself, Joell filled us in that the
good Doctor had recently sent him a "gang of beats" to rhyme
As of the moment, there's no word on whether or not other
Aftermath artists will appear on the album, which Joell hasn't
begun working on yet. Aftermath isn't without its detractors,
however. Rakim, Truth Hurts, Joe Beast and The Last Emperor
were all signed to the label but never had their albums
released. When asked whether or not this raised his own
concerns of hopping on board, Joell told LatinRapper that he
knew nothing about those situations, but that "I do know that
my work ethic is very strong in and outs of the studio and my
buzz was getting pretty strong long before the deal." He went
on to detail how his hustle would still continue. "Its funny
'cause so many people told me before I got the deal that no
one would sign a fat Latin from NYC. Now that I have been
signed, they talking about how I'm never gonna come out. I
love a challenge!" He gave a shout out to his gente that
helped build his name up, and called for them to prove the
naysayers wrong once again.
When queried over any added pressure that being a Latin MC on
Aftermath might create, Joell explained to Latin Rapper that
he constantly reps for his community and people, but isn't
necessarily trying to represent for Latin rappers as a whole.
"I rap for the people, not for other rappers or executives."
