Joell Ortiz signs to Aftermath

Back in November we interviewed Brooklyn rapper Joell Ortiz (click here to read), speaking with him about being on the grind. The work paid off, as the Puerto Rican MC just inked a deal with Interscope. Joell provided details to about the signing, and his first album through Aftermath is slated for a 2007 release.

When asked as to whether or not we can expect some hot production from Dr. Dre himself, Joell filled us in that the good Doctor had recently sent him a "gang of beats" to rhyme over.

As of the moment, there's no word on whether or not other Aftermath artists will appear on the album, which Joell hasn't begun working on yet. Aftermath isn't without its detractors, however. Rakim, Truth Hurts, Joe Beast and The Last Emperor were all signed to the label but never had their albums released. When asked whether or not this raised his own concerns of hopping on board, Joell told LatinRapper that he knew nothing about those situations, but that "I do know that my work ethic is very strong in and outs of the studio and my buzz was getting pretty strong long before the deal." He went on to detail how his hustle would still continue. "Its funny 'cause so many people told me before I got the deal that no one would sign a fat Latin from NYC. Now that I have been signed, they talking about how I'm never gonna come out. I love a challenge!" He gave a shout out to his gente that helped build his name up, and called for them to prove the naysayers wrong once again.

When queried over any added pressure that being a Latin MC on Aftermath might create, Joell explained to Latin Rapper that he constantly reps for his community and people, but isn't necessarily trying to represent for Latin rappers as a whole. "I rap for the people, not for other rappers or executives." the artist exclaimed. "Joell Ortiz is the voice of the voiceless."
